Bill and Cookie Horner

The husband and wife team of Bill and Cookie Horner has committed their lives to helping others.

The impact of their efforts has been considerable. As a general surgeon in Bangor for 20 years, Bill was instrumental in starting a comprehensive breast diagnostic center at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Cookie, a registered nurse for more than 40 years, helped to found the Acadia Homes for Students program, which provides financial and emotional support to homeless students and helped to form Brennan's Buddies, which assists families with a child battling extreme illnesses. She is also a patient volunteer for Hospice of Hancock County.

Working together, Bill and Cookie have volunteered with medical, educational and environmental organizations including:- Champion the Cure, a capital campaign for a new cancer and research center in Brewer;- Friends of Acadia, helping to maintain the hiking trails and carriage roads of Acadia National Park; Evensong, singing to hospice patients at the end of their lives; Bar Harbor Brass Week, bringing young musicians to Bar Harbor, to learn and perform together.
