Bangor, MAINE (NEWS CENTER) The WLBZ 2 2 Those Who Care awards process has drawn to a close for 2011. In addition to the individuals honored for their volunteer work and the non-profit chosen as the Agency of Distinction, nominees came from around Eastern and Central Maine.
The names of the following individuals and agencies were also suggested as noteworthy:
Mark Brown, MD of Hampden, Maine was nominated by Jane Weil and Marjorie Withers for his work wih the Community Caring Collaborative.
Wendy Faulkingham proposed A. Dowe Eaton of Sunset for a 2 Those Who Care award, citing his 42 years of service as a member of the volunteer ambulance corps.
Linwood Lufkin's contributions of time, talent and expertise to the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor prompted his nomination by Amanda Charette. Lufkin lives in Eddington.
Stanley N. Marshall, Jr. of Bangor volunteers with Legal Services for the Elderly and the AARP Tax-Aide Program. Jaye L. Martin suggested Marshall for recognition.
Gilman "Gil" Pelletier of Waterville has been delivering Meals on Wheels for 26 years in three counties. Cheryl Gifford of Spectrum Generations submitted his nomination.
June Doody of the Good Samaritan Agency proposed Ellen Port of Bangor for a 2 Those Who Care award. Port volunteers at Good Sam in the Teen Parent Education Program and in the Rosen Neonatal ICU at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Kathy Vanaria of Newburgh serves terminally ill patients and their caregivers by volunteering with both Hospice of Eastern Maine and Community Health and Counseling Services Hospice. Wayne Melanson with Hospice of Eastern Maine submitted her nomination.
Angela Watson volunteers with the Partnership Food Pantry and the SAD 4 Weekend Backpack Program in Guilford, where she lives. Al Hunt of the Guilford Economic Partnership suggested Watson for a 2 Those Who Care award.
Charlotte White Center in Dover Foxcroft was nominated as for the Agency of Distinction award. Established in 1979, CWC is the source for community health and social services for adults, children and families affected by cognitive or developmental disabilities, brain injuries, and behavioral or mental health challenges. CWC serves Pisctaquis, Penobscot, Hancock, Somerset, Kennebec and Waldo Counties.
Also considered as the Agency of Distinction, Wellspring, Inc. works with individuals and families affected by substance abuse disorders. Operating outpatient and residential services in Bangor, Wellspring offers services that foster recovery.
Phillips-Strickland House in Bangor provides residential care for elderly people who can no longer live alone. This non-profit in contention for the Agency of Distinction award credits a strong volunteer force with the ability to remain remain viable.
