Maya Brooks sends a text message to her mother.

(NEWS CENTER) -- Living rooms everywhere have people watching TV while checking text messages on their phone as they're browsing the Internet.  Sound familiar?

Our tech-obsessed culture can seem like it's taking over our lives sometimes, but how do we make sure our children learn the benefits of technology without being completely engulfed by it in an unhealthy way?

Cybele and Rich Brooks of Scarborough never debated on whether to introduce their daughters, Maya and Sophie, to technology; the question was rather how often.  They came up with "screen time" as a way to monitor how much time the girls use anything with a screen like the TV, the computer, their iPads, or phones.

Bruce Thompson and Dr. Bill Thornton, psychology professors at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, agree that completely forbidding children from technology isn't right, and would put them at a disadvantage socially, professionally, and intellectually.
