BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Medical experts say they see a spike in illnesses along with the cold winter months.

Doctors at Eastern Maine Medical Center have counted 16 separate outbreaks of the Norovirus in the state this winter. The Norovirus is highly contagious and if you catch it you can expect one to two days of vomiting and diarrhea.

The virus often gets spread in high traffic areas like offices or schools. Doctors say clean hands and a clean work space can help keep the cough away.

Doctors also say that a virus can stay active in a persons system for several days after the symptoms of their illness have ended.
