PINAL COUNTY, Arizona (KPNX) - Arizona sheriff and Congressional candidate Paul Babeu is denying claims that he abused the power of his office by threatening to deport his gay lover.

The sheriff's ex-boyfriend, a man named Jose, says Babeu threatened to deport him after the relationship ended.

Babeu says that never happened, but did admit that he is gay during a weekend press conference.

Babeu was serving as co-chair for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's state election committee.

He says he has notified officials with the campaign that he is resigning from that position.

Babeu is, however, vowing to continue his campaign for Arizona's 4th Congressional district seat.
