FERRUM, Virginia (WSLS) - Wayne Doughty of Ferrum, Virginia spent three months building an ice rink in his backyard.

"It was a dream I've had since I was six years old," said Doughty.

Doughty played hockey most of his life, but didn't find many opportunities to play when he moved his family to Franklin County, Virginia.

"I wanted to teach my son and daughter, so I thought I should just try it," said Doughty.

It took him a while to build, but he said it turned out much bigger and better than he had originally planned.

The rink is 30 by 60 feet, and includes netting, lights and a sound system

Doughty said it has been great to watch his children learn to skate and begin to play hockey.

"It is really satisfying to see him play out there and my daughter. It's a really unique feeling to build something for your kids," said Doughty.

Doughty said he has plans to continue improving the rink.
